Tank Décor And Aquarium Driftwood

July 27th, 2008

Decorating your fish tank is simply as important as any other aspect of aquarium life. To find the right things to decorate your tank with, take into consideration the décor of your room as well as the types of fish you will be housing. A piece of aquarium driftwood will make you tank shine and add depth to the whole setting.

Choosing Driftwood

Aquarium driftwood isn’t for all tanks. Aquarium driftwood is mainly for freshwater tanks. Some types of freshwater fish even like to have a snack on aquarium driftwood once in awhile. Aquarium driftwood is not for saltwater tanks or for reptiles. If you try to use it in a reptile tank, it could harm your pet.

You can easily find aquarium driftwood at your local pet store. As long as they sell aquarium supplies, they will usually sell aquarium driftwood. The next thing you will have to think about is the shape of aquarium driftwood that you require to purchase. Driftwood comes in all shapes and sizes. What you need to consider when choosing driftwood is the size of the tank and the size of your fish. If you have lesser fish, you can purchase a piece of driftwood with holes in it so they can swim through or hide if they feel like it. You can also get aquarium driftwood without holes for larger fish to swim around.

Other shapes that driftwood can come in are as skinny as branches to as thick as small logs. It all depends on how you want to decorate your tank. Make sure that if you choose a big piece that you will limit other plants and decorations. Overcrowding a tank with a lot of decorations won’t make for happy fish. Make sure you fish will have enough room to swim, stow and be happy.

Warning

If you require to get aquarium driftwood, make sure you buy it from a store that sells if specifically for fish tanks and aquariums. These pieces are treated with chemicals that will make it withstand your tank. Do not ever use real driftwood that you find outdoors for your fish tank. This gentle of driftwood will rot in your tank and could be harmful for your fish.

If you think that your tank will benefit from a great piece of aquarium driftwood, check out your local pet dealer to find great pieces of the driftwood that are not only practical, but stylish as well.

Why Choose An Acrylic Aquarium For Your Fish

July 27th, 2008

Having an aquarium in your home is a nice addition. It brings aquatic loveliness to any room in your house. From the smallest fish bowls to the most elaborate saltwater fish aquariums, aquariums are one of the unsurpassed attention getters when you have visitors over for any occasion. Fish help you to relax and they teach us many things about the underwater world. One of the most excellent types of aquariums to have in the home is the acrylic aquarium. Here are some reasons why you should consider an acrylic aquarium for your home.

The Difference Is Noticeable

There are many diverse types of aquariums on the market. However, the acrylic aquarium is one of the most excellent because it is the clearest, lightest and strongest aquariums available. The acrylic aquariums have hopefully rounded corners and they do not have silicone holding them together like a regular fish aquarium does. You and your guest will have a greater view of your underwater beauties with an acrylic aquarium.

Acrylic Aquariums Are Ideal For Saltwater Fish

If you are considering a saltwater aquarium, then you should definitely consider an acrylic aquarium. Saltwater fish and their accessories are very vibrant and bright. So you will require to display their lively cuteness. Their colors will stand out more in an acrylic aquarium because the view is much clearer than glass tanks. These aquariums are also stronger and will stand up to the wear and tear of the saltwater. Therefore, if you’re considering a saltwater aquarium, then an acrylic aquarium is a necessity.

Versatility And Shape

Most regular fish tanks only come in typical square forms. This is because their corners are bound by silicone and it is very hard to shape glass. However, acrylic aquariums can come in all shapes and size. This makes them very versatile in any home. Acrylic is very compliant and can be formed into any shape or size. Therefore, if you want a very unique fish aquarium, then you should consider an acrylic aquarium.

Strength And Insulation

Acrylic aquariums are unsurpassed known for their strength and insulation. A glass fish tank is made with silicone in its corners. However, the acrylic tank is a molecular weld and this will make for a greater insulation. They are very strong and are fewer likely to break or leak water. They are at smallest amount of ten times stronger than a regular fish tank. Therefore, if you’re looking for a strong fish aquarium, then acrylic is the unsurpassed option.

The Characteristics Of Alaskan Malamutes

July 24th, 2008

Have you ever wondered, “What are the differences between Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies?” Well, first consider that the Malamute was bred to carry a heavy load, whereas the Siberian Husky was bred to carry a lighter load over a longer distance. So naturally, Malamutes have a larger bone structure, while Huskies are much smaller and more agile. Mals have brown eyes only, whereas Huskies can have blue, gray, brown, or a mix. Malamutes also have ears that sit further back on the skull, broader heads, bulkier muzzles, a sloped back (versus the straight back of the Husky) and a waving plume tail (rather than the traditionally trailing tail of the Husky). The personalities of both breeds are very similar by nature. An Alaskan Malamute may prove to be the ideal breed of dog for you and your family. They have a lot of positive qualities. If you’re looking for a companion dog, then you’ve made the right decision. You may not have a sled to pull, but if you are searching for a sturdy dog that can run, play, walk and have fun, then the Malamute can be your ideal pet.

Common Goldfish Diseases - Symptoms and Treatment

April 22nd, 2008

The best way to keep your fish healthy is
to follow the basic rules of good aquarium or pond management. Learn how to
set up your fish tank properly. Feed your fish
correctly, keep their environment clean, avoid rapid temperature changes,
ensure there is an adequate oxygen supply and make partial water changes as
necessary.

Unfortunately, illness sometimes still
occurs and the first sign to be aware of is stress. Just as a stressed human is
prone to infection by bio-aggressors, so are fish, and stress is the principle
cause of disease in fish.

There are three basic types of diseases
in fish: parasitic, bacterial and fungal. These organisms are always present in
the aquatic environment and a healthy fish can generally ward off, however, if
a fish is weakened by stress or damage the risk of infection is high.

When fish become ill they show signs in
their behavior such as:

  • clamped fins
  • shaking bodies
  • constant scratching against objects in the tank

  • hiding in the corners
  • gasping at the surface
  • swimming abnormally

Treatment is often available for common goldfish diseases. See you local pet store and remember to treat any diseases promptly so that the whole aqauarium is not affected by the disease.

Pet Friendly Rentals

February 27th, 2008

Finding a great rental apartment or home is hard enough without having to worry about what you are going to do with your pets. It seems that finding pet friendly rentals for both living and vacation times is getting harder and harder. In many cases, that is the first thing you have to think about when looking around. Once you have a list of good ones, then you have to decide what you like and what you might want to get.

You should also know that when it comes to renting a home or apartment, there are different types of pet friendly rentals. Being a cat owner, I have run into quite a few different types. The first type is the one that allows no pets what-so-ever unless you already own them. Some landlords don’t want you going out to get new pets, but if you already have some, they may let you keep them. Those are, obviously, out if you want to get new pets in the future. This type will have what pets you have and even the names of the specific pets right in the lease. If you add more without permission, it could be a reason for your landlord to legally break your lease.

There are also some pet friendly rentals that only allow certain types of pets. Some will say that you can have cats, but you may not have any dog of any type. Some will allow small breed dogs, but you aren’t going to be able to rent from them if you have a large, yellow lab. Yet other pet friendly rentals might say that fish, hamsters, gerbils, or small reptiles are okay as long as they are in a contained unit, but dogs and cats both are not allowed.

You may find that some pet friendly rentals will make you pay more when it comes to your security deposit. You may also find some hotels allow pets, but only if you pay a small deposit as well. When looking for cottages for vacation, you may find that some people offer pet friendly rentals, but many will say that they wish you to leave your pets at home. If that is not an option for you, you have to keep looking. Though they are getting harder to find, they are out there. You might just be more limited in your choices than you first thought.

Finding Clothes and Accessories for Dogs

February 27th, 2008

The other day, I was out at the dog park, watching my pooch play with the other puppies out there. I have a medium sized mutt who is a bit temperamental, so play time at the park is always a little bit dicey. On most days, I have to watch my pup constantly, less he gets into a fight with one of the bigger dogs. On this particular day, however, I was running into another problem. Basically, my puppy just did not seem to want to play. He sort of skulked around and sulked while the other doggies frolicked around him. I took a closer look, and that is when I saw it: he was shaking.

I had never bought any clothes and accessories for dogs before except for the basics. I bought him a simple collar, a reliable leash which was about five feet long, and a few toys to play with. When I saw my doggy that cold, however, I knew that it was time to start looking for dog clothes. I went down to the local dog store and bought a simple sweater. It was woolly and thick, and it looked pretty warm. When I tried to put it on my dog, however, I was in for a bit of a surprise: the bad-tempered pup wanted nothing to do with it.

At that point I realized that dogs are every bit as difficult as humans are. When I was shopping for accessories for dogs, I had never even considered the possibility that my dog would not like what I got for him, but the evidence was right in front of my eyes. He would twist, twitch, scowl, and squirm when I tried to put the dog sweater on him.

I tried getting a looser weave of sweater for him, and that seemed to do the trick. I think that the first sweater might have been a little bit too scratchy. Although the second sweater was not as warm as the first, it was still quite a bit warmer. There is a local pet store that specializes in accessories for dogs, so I was able to get a few more of the same kind once I figured out what he liked. I even picked up a jogging leash for him while I was there. Now he is looking good, feeling alright even in the cold weather, and back to picking fights with the other dogs.

The Advantages Of Homemade Dog Food

February 14th, 2008

There are many pet food recalls around the world lately due to some issues. Thus, the best way to know what goes into your dog’s food is to make it yourself. Homemade dog food often contains more vitamins and nutrients, which are essential for the overall health and wellbeing of your pet.

Hence, instead of settling for any of these wonderful leading brands of dog food, you would redefine your search this time oriented towards finding homemade dog food recipes. In this way, you would be assured that you offer your pet the healthiest possible food. At the same time you would feel exceptionally satisfied that your efforts to provide your dog with the best nutrition is no longer left to chance.

The most advantage of adopting the homemade dog food recipes is that the food your dog would eat would always be fresh. You do not need to worry about the expiry dates and whether the food got oxygenated or contaminated after opening the can or packet. The food would be now fresh for every feed.

This food is incredibly easy to prepare, and you start by combining all the ingredients in a bowl. Then you simply store at room temperature and serve to your dog at mealtime, just like you would with any other food. Keep in mind that a good multivitamin may be added for good measure.

When you made it by yourself, the homemade dog food recipes would still be less costly than any brand of dog food you have ever bought. You may also want to consider the option of making larger amounts and selling to make a profit. This is often a beneficial idea because most pet owners are interested in giving their pets a healthier and fresher food but do not have the time or effort to make it him or herself.

The Language of the Pet Food Industry

January 21st, 2008

Last year’s pet food recalls focused a great deal of attention on the pet food industry, and forced many people to re-think what they feed their beloved companions. If you’re still unsure if you’re feeding your pet the best food, or are considering what food to buy for a new pet, it is easier to investigate if you understand what the words on the bags, boxes, and cans really mean.

“Pet food” means a commercially prepared product, designed with a specific species (dog, cat, bird, etc.) in mind. The most common phrase found on pet food is “complete and balanced”, which means that the food is designed to be the sole source of nutrition for your pet.

The components in pet food will be listed in the “ingredients” section, and just like human food it is listed in descending order by weight. The “guaranteed analysis” of a product refers to either the minimum or maximum value of essential nutrients such as fiber, fat, and protein, as well as water content. Whether it is minimum or maximum will be stated.

The exact words used to describe the product are also important to watch. For example, if the label states “Beef Dog Food” it must contain 95 percent beef, while “Beef Formula Dog Food” only needs to be 25 percent beef to comply with labeling regulations.

Awareness of the language used to describe your pet food will help you to make an informed choice.

Healthy Dog Food

January 13th, 2008

How to choose your healthy dog food? The first things you need to know when choosing healthy dog food is make sure that the ingredient listed on the label is a form of protein. It shall be lamb, venison, chicken or similar meat.

The dog food must exclude cornmeal, corn and wheat. The lower quality dog foods will typically have a list of by products and fillers as its main ingredients.

On a healthy dog food you must be aware that while some preservatives may be necessary in order to keep the food edible. Preservatives do not have to be artificial chemicals; since these chemicals might be cancer causing agents are in no way healthy for your dog.

In fact, if you have a bit of time to spare a great idea is to make your own dog food. When making your own dog food you will be aware or every single ingredients going into it and therefore will be doing the best for your dog’s health.

Healthy dog food is just one aspect of your dog’s health. You need to ensure that they are drinking plenty of water and getting lots of regular exercise. You should take your dog out for a walk at least a few times a day, and they should have chew toys that are designed to help keep their teeth clean and healthy.

Lastly, you need to check regularly with veterinarian to make sure your dog in good health. You may get more information on healthy dog food at healthy dog food.
