Creating A Custom Fish Tank

August 9th, 2007

If you already have an aquarium in your home then you will be familiar with the benefits of keeping fish and the serenity they bring to your life.

If you have a garden or a small outdoor area you can also enjoy those benefits outdoors by building your own garden pond and stocking it with fish.

That’s what I did! I wanted to enjoy keeping fish outside in a more natural environment as well as having them in the aquarium in my living room so I built a small garden pond.

Planning the pond was a lot of fun. I located the pond on the terrace near the house so I could hear the sound of the water from the waterfall and see the fish through the terrace doors.

I initially had an issue with algae. The pond gets summer sun which encourages the growth of algae but one of the benefits of the sunlight is that it also allows me grow water lilies in the pond. The water lily pads provide shade for the pond in the summer time, the algae has been reduced and the water is clear.
