Pet Care Products and Accessories

December 26th, 2007

The modern urban lifestyle isn’t very suitable for our pets. Pollution, stress, depression, anxiety and unhealthy lifestyles are having a devastating effect on the lives of pets.

When people think of pet care products, most associate it with the
essential pet supplies like pet food and pet houses, which allow pet
owners to provide their pets with what they need to live long and healthy lives.

However, for some
pet owners, the term does not just cover the essential pet supplies
that they need to provide for their pets.
This is because for them the term pet care products also covers or
includes some non-essential items, which are effective in providing
their pets with the utmost comfort, which can also help them ensure that their pets remain healthy and happy.

Goldfish Diseases - Recognizing The Symptoms

December 16th, 2007

Keeping your goldfish healthy is relatively easy if you follow some basic rules of pond or aquariuim management. These include feeding your fish correctly, keeping the aquatic environment clean, avoiding rapid temperature
changes, ensuring there is an adequate oxygen supply and performing partial
water changes on a regular basis.

No matter how well you maintain your aquarium, unfortunately, illness sometimes still occurs and it is important that you identify goldfish diseases
as soon as they strike. The first sign to be aware of is stress. Just as a
stressed human is prone to infection by bio-aggressors, so are fish,
and stress is the principle cause of disease in fish.

There are three basic types
of goldfish diseases: parasitic, fungal and bacterial. These organisms
are always present in the aquatic environment and a healthy fish can
generally ward them off. However, if a fish is weakened by stress or
damage the risk of infection is high.

When fish become ill they display behavioral symptoms such as:

  • clamped fins
  • bodies shaking
  • repeated scratching against objects in the tank
  • hiding in corners
  • gasping at the surface
  • swimming abnormally
  • sitting on the bottom
  • breathing difficulties

The good news is that most goldfish diseases can be treated if caught in time.

A Fish Tank Chiller Will Maintain A Stable Tank Temperature

December 6th, 2007

Perhaps the most important piece of equipment in your fish tank is the filter system. However, if you have a marine aquarium you may find that you also require a fish tank chiller. There are a several different types of fish tank chillers including drop in chillers, thermoelectric chillers and in-line chillers. Choose the one that best fits your fish tank size and add it when setting up the aquarium fish tank.

Now, getting back to filters, one of the most common types is a box that fits over the side of the tank. The water is circulated through the filtration system, which usually uses charcoal to filter the impurities out of the water. Another type of filtration system is a biological filtration system. This can be used in conjunction with the charcoal filtration system, and allows good bacteria to grow in the tank and which can help keep the tank clean.

The number of fish you have in the tank can lead to problems, especially if your fish are overcrowded. Make sure you have the correct population for the size of tank you have. Along with this, overfeeding can often be a problem. Fish should only be fed the amount they can eat within a few minutes. If you feed the fish too much, the leftovers fall to the bottom of the tank and turn into sludge which is not a healthy environment for fish to live in.

You will need to perform partial water changes on a weekly basis as part of the fish tank maintenance. This keeps the algae levels under control and helps to provide a healthier environment for your fish. Every two weeks or so as part of your fish tank maintenance, you will need to change out a larger percentage of the water; every week you should be changing about 15%, while every two weeks about 50% or more should be changed out.

Just keeping an eye on your fish and observing their behavior can help maintain a healthy aquarium. If the fish are looking unhealthy, take a proactive approach and figure out what is wrong with them and fix it. Keeping a clean fish tank and healthy living environment are not difficult fish tank maintenance tasks, and a little preventive fish tank maintenance here and there can really help in the long run.

Dachshunds - What You Need To Know

Dachshunds - What Your Need To Know

Looking to bring a cute Dachshund dog home? Here’s the vital 411 to help you decide!

Dachshunds
are good family dogs, eager and friendly. Many can make good watch dogs because
their bark is surprisingly loud and deep. They are devoted and active, and can
get along with children and some pets.

There are many caveats, however. If you plan to consider adding a Dachshund
to the household, consider that they require good, solid training to prevent
disobedience. If you have a yard, their natural instinct to hunt will often
lead them to “hunt” in the yard and do some damage in the process. Unlike many
dogs, however, Dachshunds easily adapt to apartments and small homes without
yards.

There
are two Dachshund sizes – standard and
miniature Dachshund. The standard Dachshund is
generally good with children, while the miniature does better with older
children. Both should be socialized with cats early in life, if you plan to
have or you do have cats.

Adding Fish to Your Aquarium

December 5th, 2007

Your aquarium is set up and you’ve tested the water to be sure it is safe. Now, you are ready to run to the store and buy ten or fifteen colorful fish, right? Actually, if you want to have a happy, healthy environment for your fish, there’s a bit more to it than that.

Before deciding which fish to add to your aquarium, there are certain things you should consider. You can’t add a predatory fish to a tank that already contains weak fish. Fish should be about the same size, otherwise, a larger one may end up eating a smaller one. Make sure you consider what the fish will be like when it is fully mature. You want the environment to be stress-free, so it’s best to only select fish that can dwell in an aquarium together peacefully.

The best way to avoid any problems is by researching the needs and attitudes of the fish you want to get so that you will definitely know if they are compatible. You will need to make sure the fish are community fish, which means that they like to be around other fish. You will also need to find out if the fish have about the same water quality preferences and needs in terms of temperature and hardness. They are also much easier to care for if they like the same foods and plants.

A territorial fish, such as a toadfish or a damselfish, will want to be alone so it will try to scare off other fish that are somewhat similar to it, whether in species, shape or color. A peaceful fish, such as a guppy or a swordtail, is least likely to disturb others. A spirited fish, such as a blue damsel or a goatfish, may go after slower fish.
