Breeding Labradors for the Best of the Breed

October 30th, 2008

There are some things you should know if you are interested in breeding Labradors.  Especially if you want to breed labradors for a dog show. The goal of breeding Labradors, or any dog, is for the puppy to have the ideal characteristics for which you are looking.  However, you won’t know which dogs to breed if you do not know which characteristics are most favorable in Labrador dogs. Learning these traits will help you to be a successful breeder of Labradors. It could make all the difference in winning that first place ribbon at any dog show.

There are certain variations of the Labrador breed that would be actually be penalized in a dog show. For instance, the Labrador retriever could be one. The retriever is a medium-sized dog with a short coat, small ears, and a short thick tail and is not considered “show” qualities.  Likewise are the weedy, light dogs, the leggy, tall dogs, the low-stationed, long dogs, and the lumbering, cloddy dogs. These will all earn penalties in the dog shows as they are contradictory to the proportionate and sturdy build of the ideal Labrador.

Certain anatomical characteristics are important when breeding Labradors. Ideally, the Labrador’s head should include a broad snout, clean cheeks, powerful muzzle, and, white teeth. The dog's nose color can vary, depending on the dog"s coat color. The nostrils should be wide and open. The eyes should be a slightly triangular-shape and have a kind expression.  Finally, the ears should be short and be triangular in shape and should drop.

The key to breeding Labradors is to look for a favorable temperament.  This will impress any judge at the dog shows.  Labrador retrievers are eager to please and they are also very outgoing and friendly animals.  Labradors are also quite intelligent.  Judges look for these characteristics when evaluating Labradors in a dog show.

Labradors can be black, chocolate, or yellow.  Yellow dogs may vary in shade, and some labs may have a white spot on the chest, though this is not preferred. You might be please to note that the Judges do not give any penalties if a Labrador has white hairs due to aging and scarring.

Judges look for Labradors who are bred to be a specific height and weight. They are looking to see that the height and weight is typical of Labradors.  For male Labradors, the typical height is twenty-two and one-half inches to twenty-four and one-half inches. Male dogs should weigh between sixty-five and eighty pounds.  For female Labradors, the typical height is between twenty-one and one-half and twenty-three and one-half inches.  The ideal weight for female dogs is fifty-five to seventy pounds.

It is important to be aware of dog show criteria when you are breeding Labradors. You want to be able to breed certain characteristics and traits for the best results.  Breeding Labradors can be a challenge, but it can be very rewarding if you are successful and achieve your goals.

What You Should Know About Poodle Puppies

October 30th, 2008

Poodle Puppy

They’re cute, curly, and cuddly, and you could be going home with one today! Poodle puppies make great pets, and you’ll need to know just what they need in order to be most comfortable in your home, so here are some for being a great poodle owner.

Whatever poodle breed you decide to buy, you have to be aware that some poodle breeds tend to be somewhat reclusive or anti-social, and can be very unfriendly around strangers, unless of course they are trained. You will have to train your puppies and socialize the poodle puppy by keeping them in an environment that has people around often, this way they won;t be overwhelmed when you take them out or if you have other people around.

You should also make sure that you take your poodle puppies to the vet often for checkups, since poodles tend to have vision problems fairly often. Your poodle’s eyes should be alert and shiny, and if you start to notice a film around the eyes, or if you see that your puppy’s eyes are running often, this could be a sign of cataracts. Treating this condition in the early stages is key, so be sure to tell the vet if you notice that your dog’s vision is a little cloudy. Poodle puppies are also prone to ear infections, as are most other poodles, so be sure to have your puppy’s ears checked at the vet as well; hearing tests, as well as medication may need to be administered, and you should ask your animal doctor about dosages for your puppy as well.

Poodle’s tend to have sensitive skin and you may notice this often, so you have to make sure that some grooming products would not be used for grooming your poodle. It is common to see poodle owners dye their dog’s hair in different colors, or shampoo the fur with expensive shampoos. Be aware however, that the chemicals in some these products could be harmful to your poodle puppies, and this could cause skin irritations and rashes. Further your poodle might develop allergies with such products, so should notice that your poodle is sluggish, or is perhaps often sneezing, then you should leave the grooming to professionals or have them do it in your home.

Need To Potty Train Your Puppy?

October 30th, 2008

You may have just recently purchased a new puppy. He is so adorable! Beside enjoying your little pal, you also want to protect your home so your furnishings and carpets aren’t ruined. What should you do now?

One of your first jobs is to teach your puppy where to relieve himself so your home won’t be damaged. Do you know what to do now?

Grab your free dog training course and learn more about house training puppy.

Dogs act mainly from habits that have been developed over a period of time and that fact can help you as a dog owner. Don’t let your puppy create his own habits. Teach him the ones you want him to learn. Puppies have limitations and you need to be aware of them. Your puppy’s bladder is very small, so he can’t wait very long before having to urinate. Understanding and patience will help you deal with your puppy’s limitations.

Yelling at your puppy if he has an accident isn’t a good idea. You’ll need to exercise patience with your new pal. If your puppy has an accident on the living room carpet, be gentle with him. Tell him “no” in a gentle way. Then pick him up and place him where you do want him to go potty. Then tell him to go potty in that place in your own words.

Using a crate for puppy training purposes is a good idea. That’s because dogs don’t like to urinate or defecate where they spend a lot of time. Playpens can also be used for training purposes.

Be aware that there are certain times when your new pal is more likely to want to relieve himself. First thing in the morning is one of the times when your puppy will need to relieve himself. Eating activates your puppy’s elimination process, so he’ll probably want to relieve himself after any meal he eats. Be sure to take your puppy to his designated toilet area before he goes to bed at night. Right after romping around for a while, your pal will probably want to go potty.

Your new pet needs close supervision. If he goes potty on his own outside, be sure to praise him immediately. If he should go potty inside the house, you need to gently but sternly let him know that isn’t the right place to go. Be sure to praise your puppy when he does go in the correct place. He really needs your approval.

Your puppy will often let you know when he’s about to relieve himself. Wandering off, sniffing and circling are signs that your puppy is ready to relieve himself. Maybe he’ll go and stand at the door.

Patience and kindness goes a long way in dog training. Be sure to spend time training your new pal to urinate or deficate where you have chosen for him to go. The time and effort you put into training your new pal will be worth it when he knows the right time and place to relieve himself.

Custom Cedar Dog House – Advantages Of Building Your Own Wooden Dog House

October 29th, 2008

No one knows whether dogs actually prefer dog houses or not. But cedar dog houses are one of the most common materials used to build dog houses.

If you have a large sized dog in your home, then a custom cedar dog house is needed. However, buying large wooden dog house is often not easy as not many pet shops or online stores sell large custom dog houses.

The most practical way is to do it yourself. There are several doghouse plans you can find online. You can then simply pass it to your contractor to build one for you or do everything yourself.

One advantage of building your own custom cedar dog house is that you can decide on how big or small your doghouse should be. You can even build a custom cedar wooden dog house large enough to accommodate two or more dogs.

So after you build the dog house, where should you place it? Most people put their doghouse at the back of the house.

However, it may not be a good idea. This is because dogs are social animals and love to be near humans. By placing your doghouse at the back of the house or away from humans, most dogs may not even want to stay in their dog house.

That is why I recommend placing your dog house in front of your house or at the side of the home.

The dog house should also be jacked up off the ground, preferably with slabs underneath the foundation to trap airspace. It aids in insulation and can help keep your doghouse warm during winter months.

For wind insulation, you can install a flap in front of the dog house.

Lastly, make sure to keep the doghouse clean by making sure waste material and urine are not near the doghouse.

If you want a comfortable home for your large sized dog, then building and maintaining a custom cedar wood dog house is recommended.

State-of-the-art Ionic Air Purifier - Overlooked Bird Flu CounterShield?

October 28th, 2008

Japanese Sharp Corporation releases a press statement on 27 August 2008 that did not grab any headlines. But one day, it may be on Page One of every newspaper on earth! Incorporated in its ionic air purifier, the Plasmacluster Ion Technology (more on this in a later post) has just been scientifically proven to be 99.9% effective in eliminating the bird flu virus known as H5N1.

Every now and then, the press reminds us that bird flu is the prime suspect to cause mankind’s next pandemic. Pandemic sounds terrifying. It is. That’s when a deadly virus turns totally global, in a very negative sense. History records for us that 50 million people may have died during the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic! That was blamed on the H1N1 virus which was only recently confirmed on 5 October 2005 by the World Health Organization (WHO) to be a bird flu virus.

Red Alert! Time to PANIC?

Not now. WHO statistics (updated up to 10 Sep 2008) tracing back to 1996 when the H5N1 virus first surfaced in China shows a relatively low death toll of 245. So what’s the fuss? Mutation of the bird flu virus to achieve human-to-human transmission capability is the ultimate horror of the scientific community. To the knowledge of WHO, there has been only one probable case of human-to-human transmission recorded in Thailand in September 2004. Don’t be surprised by the global pandemonium in the event that the dreaded virus mutation actually occurs.

With increasing momentum. many countries are conscientiously preparing for the worse (more on this in a later post). At our individual level, we should start doing some homework too.

Ok, so what’s all this got to do with Sharp’s ionic air purifier. Isn’t it just another ionic air purifier? It is ordinary in that it performs the usual functions of the run-of-the-mill air purifier by getting rid of dust, dirt, smoke, dander, pollen, cuisine and pet odours, pollutants, allergens etc. But if we can get protection from all these and more in one ionic air purifier, especially one that is a tested defense shield against a potentially deadly virus, why not? And that is precisely what Sharp is telling us; get the whole package with their Plasmacluster Ion Technology.

Obviously, for the value-conscious, the next logical question would be “yes, that makes a whole lot of sense but at what cost”? Here again, Sharp claims that it’s at no extra cost! Sharp contends that over a 5-year period, it is cheaper than any other competing ionic air purifier. Great value for our hard-earned money! How is it possible in this nothing-is-for-free world?

Well, in promotional materials, using the Plasmacluster Ionic Air Purifier Model FP-N40CX as the basis, Sharp contends that it is much better value for money as there is no filter replacement costs for the first 5 years. Upfront costs at US$399 for the Sharp model is higher than the typical competitor’s US$160. But the latter requires annual filter replacement costs of US$100, adding to a total cost of US$560 over 5 years.

Since I have only started on this study, I would greatly appreciate any feedback on the numbers quoted by Sharp. Please drop me a note if you have actual experience.

Meanwhile, I’m going to scrutinise intently the Sharp Plasmacluster Ion Technology. The time to research is now, while bird flu is still not quite at pandemic proportions.

Its never too soon to get ready. Believe me, I have seen it. I remember my family, along with thousands of other frantic people, scrambling around town looking for the much-touted N95 face mask when the last near-pandemic scare took place in Asia. It was the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) virus. Originating in Asia in 2003, it eventually infected 8,096 people around the world and resulted in 774 fatalities. We all know that being well prepared is half the battle won.

Ionic Air Purifier - Innovative Plasmacluster Ions Defence Shield Against Killer Bird Flu Virus

October 27th, 2008

Sharp Corporation issued a seemingly ordinary press release on 27 August 2008. But I believe the information therein will one day gain global prominence!

It is. That’s when a highly contagious and deadly virus goes global, in a very negative sense. In 1918, an invisible bug is believed to have wiped out 50 million people during the Spanish Flu pandemic! That deadly killer flu was confirmed on 5 October 2005 by the World Health Organization (WHO) to be caused by H1N1, a bird flu virus.

Now that I have your attention, is it time to PANIC?

Not quite, not yet anyway. Statistically, as recorded by WHO as at 10 Sep 2008, “only” 245 people have died from the H5N1 virus. This is since 1996 when the virus first surfaced in China. So what’s the fuss? A bird flu virus that attains human-to-human transmission capability is the ultimate horror of the scientific community. Currently, there has been only one probable case of human-to-human transmission recorded in Thailand in September 2004. But if (it seems the virus has not reached the “when” stage) the dreaded virus mutation takes place, you can expect pandemonium on a global scale.

As the threat grows day by day, countries around the globe are conscientiously preparing for the worse (more on this in a later post). At our individual level, we should start doing some homework too.

Ok, so what has the Sharp ionic air purifier to do with all this. Is it not just another ordinary ionic air purifier? Yes, because it takes care of the usual pollutants (dust, dirt, smoke, dander, pollen, cuisine odors, pet odors, allergens etc) that contaminate the air that we breathe and live in. But if we can get protection from all these and more in one ionic air purifier, especially one that is a tested defense shield against a potentially deadly virus, why not? That’s what Sharp is saying, get the all-in-one air purifier with their Plasmacluster Ion Air Purifier.

The next obvious question for the value-conscious, would be “yes, that makes a whole lot of sense but at what cost”? According to Sharp, none at all! Sharp contends that it is cheaper than any other competing ionic air purifier when measured over 5 years. A case of over-delivering by Sharp? But, how is this possible in this nothing-is-for-free world?

It is entirely possible, says Sharp. For example, there is much better value for money in its Plasmacluster Ionic Air Purifier Model FP-N40CX as there is no filter replacement costs for the first 5 years. Upfront costs at US$399 for the Sharp model is higher than the typical competitor’s US$160. But the latter requires annual filter replacement costs of US$100, adding to a total cost of US$560 over 5 years.

Feedback on relevant data on Sharp or its competitors will be very much appreciated. Do let me know if you have recent actual data.

My next move would be to seriously investigate the Sharp Plasmacluster Ion Technology. Especially since bird flu is still not quite at pandemic proportions.

Join me in my quest. I know. I remember my family, along with thousands of other frantic people, scrambling around town looking for the much-touted N95 face mask when the last near-pandemic scare took place in Asia. SARS! Four letters that struck terror in Asia. The SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) virus started spreading from Asia, infected 8,096 people around the world, resulting in 774 fatalities. We all know that being well prepared is half the battle won.

Ionic Air Purifier - Japanese Plasmacluster Ions Technology Leads The Charge Against Lethal Bird Flu Virus

October 27th, 2008

On 27 August 2008, Sharp Corporation issued a press release that may someday be recognised as the true beginning of mankind’s war against bird flu! Incorporated in its ionic air purifier, the Plasmacluster Ion Technology (more on this in a later post) has just been scientifically proven to be 99.9% effective in eliminating the bird flu virus known as H5N1.

Do Not Start A Home Business With Dog Training Products Before You Read This Article!

October 26th, 2008

Working in the comfort of your home is something a lot of people would like to do. There are times in your life for example if you are a stay at home parent, or when you are taking care of elderly family members that you are bound to your home but you would like to make some money by working at home. A few years a go I would advise you to start a (micro) business in dog training products but is this still advisable?

There are a lot of people who try to make a living and start a small business online and in theory it sounds perfect. But there are a lot of mountains to climb before you earn anything and it is easy to get discouraged. A huge amount of competitors are selling dog training products in this niche. There are a lot of dog lovers out there who would like to have a career dog in training but did not have the time and had the same idea about an online business. Some have indeed become good sellers from dog training products. But almost all of the successful sites have started early and the ones who have just started and are successful often sell dog training products they have developed them self. Dog training products can be sold with a yahoo or amazon shop, but we advice you to do some research to your competition.

Dog training products are very salable that is true but consumers do not just look for nice products they look for reliable sellers. Often consumers buy from the large and well known web shops and not from small shops that all look the same. If you do want to start your own web shop and sell dog training products or something else dog related you need to do some proper research and try to find products that are new, salable, are what they claim to be, and you need to find a good supplier. You also need a website that is eye catching and worth to remember, a site that people trust and where they will return if they want to buy some other dog training products.

Competition

making sure that people can find your website is also difficult. Because there is such a enormous amount of competition and the competition is trained to build high traffic websites, and they know exactly how to attract traffic to their website this is your biggest challenge. Your site and products need to be found in search engines by the people who are looking for dog training products. But because there is so much competition that will be very hard. The key to your success as a online dog training products shop will depend on the amount of research and time you put in internet marketing not in your knowledge about dog training products.

The last but certainly not least tip we want to give you, if you still want to start a internet business in dog training products is that you should not invest large amounts of money into your shop if you can not spear it. Paying a lot of money for building a website or for internet marketing does not guarantee that you will earn your investment back with dog training products in a reasonable amount of time.

Buying a cat- what you need to know.

October 24th, 2008

Buying a cat- what you need to know.

So,you’ve decided that you want to have a pet cat. However, before you shop for your kitten, you may need to consider a few important things. After all, finding out that a cat is not for you after you’ve already grown attached can be heart breaking.

The main reason that people have to find their cats new homes is that they are allergic to cats. If you’ve never spent much time around cats, be sure you can spend a few hours in a home with cats without developing an allergy attack. Also, check with friends and family to be sure none of them are highly allergic.

Next, you may want to consider your lifestyle. Although most different cat breeds need less interaction than dogs, your cat can still become lonely and bored if left alone all day. A bored cat is often a bad cat. If you work long hours, consider getting two kittens so that they can keep each other company.

Don’t forget to take a look at your home and be sure you can fit in a cat and all of his accessories. Cats need litter boxes, food dishes, toys, and a scratching post. If you have children, the litter box will need to be placed in a place that your children can’t get to, but that your cat can access easily.

Once you decide that a cat will fit into your household, you will need to decide whether you want a kitten or an older cat. Most people take one look at that cute, fluffy kitten and fall in love. Since kittens have not developed bad habits, a kitten is the perfect choice for people who have time to litter box train their new pet. Most kittens have not yet been altered or declawed and must receive a series of immunizations to protect them from infectious cat diseases. Older cats are a good choice for people who want a slightly less energetic pet and do not have time to train their cats to use the litter box. Most older pet cats have already been altered and will only need to take booster vaccinations.

Now that you know whether you want a cat or a kitten, you will need to find out where to buy your new cat. If you just want a great pet and aren’t concerned with owning a specific cat  breed, the best place to look is your local humane society or animal rescue. These organizations are usually overrun with healthy, sweet cats and kittens. If you are looking for a specific cat breed instead, a cat show can be a wonderful resource. Many exhibitors bring along a few kittens that are for sale. Even if you can’t find kittens of the breed you are looking for at the show, you can ask exhibitors to place you on a waiting list for one of their kittens.

Once you bring your new pet home, don’t be surprised if your cat takes several days to settle in. To help your cat adjust quickly, be sure you have a bed, litter box, and food dishes set up in a permanent spot.

Cat Care And The Common Disease Symptoms You Need To Look For

October 24th, 2008

When we feel pain in our bodies, we can easily tell somebody that there is something wrong and that person will be able to get you to the hospital. Pets cannot do that merely observing them can tell you a lot of things. which is why owners should practice cat care and be aware of the symptoms.

Talked About below are a a few diseases and their symptoms you should look out for.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is the most feared disease by cat owners. It is a known fact, that it is the leading cause of death amongst cats. It is caused by a coronavirus infection and what is yet worse, is that the symptoms are very much like other diseases so it is really hard to diagnose.

There is also Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) that is similar to HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). Just like the version in humans, it is a life long infection that progresses slowly and kills the cat.

Cats may also be infected by Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV). This is a is a retrovirus that causes fatal cancerous and non cancerous diseases. Fortunately, it can be easily treated by using some household bleach and detergents, also your pet must be kept warm. This disease is transmitted through the saliva, tears, urine and feces of other cats that are infected. unlike the other two diseases, it is unable to live that long in the environment. Hence, it is only transmissible when the infected cat stays with some other cat for any period of time.

Worms are also another threat to cats and this is caused by a fungal infection that is spread through spores. Since it is a self-limiting disease, you do not need to do anything to make it go away. It will eventually clear up but it may just take a few months.

If your cat is overweight, the chances are it already has feline diabetes. The symptoms of this disease include excessive urination and thirst as well as weight loss or gain. Veterinarians are not yet certain what causes this, but there have been a few research studies that have shown that there is a link between pancreatic disease, hormonal imbalance and particular medications.

The symptoms of most of the diseases mentioned are very similar. These include diarrhea, vomiting, lameness lasting for more than five days in one leg, a decrease in vision, excessive panting, a seizure, blood in the stool or urine, hair loss, persistent coughing or gagging and breathing heavily or rapidly at rest. In order to find the answer, your cat will have to undergo some tests.

Your vet will take some blood, urine and feces samples and ask for input from you, about any observation you have made. When the tests results come back, only then will the proper treatment be administered to your cat as each case is different, so what worked for another cat may not have the self same positive effect with yours.

Your cat could still be healthy if you gave it constant attention. This can be done by giving it high quality food, giving it fresh water, allowing it to exercise, proper grooming, making for sure it stays indoors and taking it on a regular basis to the veterinary surgeon.

If you have neglected any of these simple steps, something wrong is sure to happen and you will soon detect a change in the behaviour of the cat and doing nothing about it, it is just going to make things worse. So observe proper cat care and look out for symptoms.
