Our Simple Tips On Feeding Your Horse The Best Hay

February 28th, 2009

The idea of feeding a horse may look easy but may horse owners are uninformed about the basics. It is a fact that there is no golden rule applicable involving the nutritional requires of a horse, as it for the most part depends on the age, body weight and the level of activity, which the horse goes through. To start with, your horse by nature uses grass as a primary element of their diets. It is one of the MAJOR necessities for a properly functioning digestive system so when we talk of pasture, we normally mean natural pasture and cut hay.

The amount of food a big horse needs per day is subject on its body weight, which is 2 to 2.5%, so if the horse weighs a 1,000 pound the quantity of everyday food needed can be calculated to 20 to 25 pounds. Horses require food, which is high in nutrition value and not high-fiber, food which tampers with its digestive system. Ideally, your horse would be healthy if you fed him with 1% of his body size made up of hay/pasture grass. In case your horse is not employed in much activity, then the right feed is only forge without any grains. On the other hand, horses which are active, or at the growing or breeding stage, need extra supplementary feeds over and above the forage like grains or concentrate supplements. Think about it this way, foraging should offer at least one half or more of the total size of the food eaten everyday for optimum growth and development.

When you are considering a balanced diet for your horse, consider the nutrient content as well as quality criteria of the grass. This information would help you to gauge the amount of nutrients he would need. The best source, and the least expensive one for summer food is your grass fields and, in most cases good pasture by itself can provide all the nutritional requirements your horse needs. But how do you come to know how much pasture is right for your horse? Using a weight of 1000 to 1200 pounds, here is a rough guideline. This means that a mare and foal 1.75 to 2 acres - yearlings 1.5 to 2 acre and weanlings 0.5 to 1 acre.

Winter food of course would be cut hay, and again, high quality if you can provide it. The hay which you food should be cut uniformly and have green leafy appearance and there should not be any dust, moulds, weeds or stubble accompanying the hay. This feed is ordinarily rich in protein, minerals and vitamins. Alfalfa hay is great for horses in a developing phase as it is protein enriched by there could be excessive calcium content in relation to phosphorus. Overdose of calcium is not recommended for growing horses; so in case you have any doubts, get the hay quality analyzed.

You can buy used horse trailers only when you are sure you need one. There are many different kinds of horse trailers for sale. If you only have one horse then you just need a simple one horse trailer. The most important consideration when deciding on what used horse trailer to buy is the floor. Make sure it is stable and the wood is not rotted.

Horse Rescued from Snow Covered Pool

February 28th, 2009

Spider the Horse Falls into Snow Covered Pool

Firefighters were called to rescue an 11 year old American Paint horse that had fallen through a snow covered swimming pool cover into a pool in Sherborn, Massachusetts.

The firefighters arrived to find the horse in the deep end of the pool shivering with cold and nervousness. After considering the rescue options the firefighters decided to cut through the ice and pool cover and lead the nervous horse to safety.

The horse had escaped from his barn while nobody was looking. Unfortunately the gates between the barn and the swimming pool could not be closed due to the snow which also obscured the inground pool.

Spider the horse walked onto the surface of the pool which was protected with a high strength swimming pool cover. Advertisers of this particular pool cover proudly announce that it can take the weight of a small elephant. Unfortunately the pool cover wasn’t strong enough to take the weight of both the snow and the horse.

There were fears that Spider would succumb to hypothermia as the pool heaters were no longer in use and the water was covered in a layer of ice. But firefighters managed to successfully return him to his stable in about half an hour. He’d suffered a few minor scratches to his feet but the biggest concern was hypothermia.

Spider the horse was treated to a vigorous rub down and warmed up with propane heaters. It was clear that he had not suffered any adverse affects from his cold, mid winter dip.

Pool owners are warned that their swimming pool covers may be able take a lot of weight but if there is already snow and ice on the cover and then it is walked on the additional weight can be enough to tear the cover. Combine this risk with the camouflaging effect of the snow and you have an immediate hazard to both animals and humans. Pool owners are encouraged to put a fence around their inground swimming pools to prevent accidents like this.

Washing machines for horse riding schools

February 28th, 2009

Good hygiene is paramount for the wellbeing of horses that live in equestrian schools, and the correct cleaning of the material that comes into contact with the horses is important.Your article has 10 sentences left that can be rewritten. In fact a clean horse blanket is a sure sign of a well kept horse! This is extremely important when it comes to competitions where great importance is placed on visual appearance. Cleaning blankets in a simple domestic machine will not be good enough. This is a specialist job requiring the right technology and wash programmes. A laundry within the riding school has many advantages. Laundry can be done as part of the daily routine thus ensuring equine smells will remain in the stable.
A great large capacity washing machine on the market which fits the bill is Miele. This offers washer-extractors with capacities of 7.5 to 32 kg with special wash programmes for horse blankets and accessories which are just perfect for equestrian schools. The machine has four special programmes for washing and proofing horse blankets: a 30°C and a 60°C programme, a programme for delicates and one with a proofing phase specifically included for waterproofing. These machines can also handle halters, girths, bandages, saddlecloths and other textile items which are not always readily accepted by commercial laundries.
Laundry is usually completed and ready for use in just less than an hour. These machines have high spin speeds therefore drying times are greatly reduced.
A great machine for equestrian schools would be the Miele PW 6101 washing machine with a PT 7251 tumble dryer. These can cope with 1 winter blanket plus 2 summer blankets or up to 7 saddle cloths per load.
Over a period of time an investment in one of these machines is sure to pay dividends!

Laundering your horse rug

February 28th, 2009

Anyone who has made the decision to buy a horse will soon find out that there is so much to learn. One thing I had not considered was the maintenance needed for all the equipment etc and below are some useful points I have discovered which you may like to share.
The purchase of a good quality horse blanket is important and the aftercare, because laundering equestrian blankets needs an industrial washing machine.
Your horse should definately be checked on a daily basis to make sure that their blanket is not pulling or rubbing. If you see any bits of broken hairs this is a sure sign.
Folding your blankets, fleeces and rugs, correctly will make them so much easier and safer to put back on your horse or pony. The horse is also less likely to spook if you put a folded bundle on his back, slowly unfolding it than he would if you just dumped the blanket over his back and dragged it into position.
Fold your blanket whilst taking it off the horse or when cleaning in preparation for the next use. A folded blanket is much easier to move around.
Start with the blanket, unbuckled on the horse, or if you find it easier take it off and lay it on the ground. Then lay the blanket so that the outside is facing upwards. Spread the straps out straight so they can then be folded into the blanket as you go.
Fold the back third of the blanket up towards the middle, then tuck the leg straps in and fold in the tail flap.
Then fold the front third part of the blanket back towards the folded edge. Straighten out the shoulder gussets.
Fold the right side back up so the lower edge meets the centre seam.
Then fold the lefthand side up so the lower edge meets the centre, folding up the belly straps.
Put the two halves together. The bundle can then be folded together another time and packed in a bag for storage. Then just reverse the order of the folds to put the blanket back on the horse easily.
If your horse is kept outside a lot it will probably be a good idea to have two outdoor rugs. An extra blanket allows you to swop one blanket in order to allow the other one to dry.

It is wise not to try to wash your horse blankets in your washing machine!
There are heavy duty washing machines that can be bought especially for “equestrian use”. This could be invaluable and if you share livery with other folk at your stables it could well be considered a great investment if the cost is shared.

How to Shop for a Large Fish Tank

February 28th, 2009

I remember very clearly one vacation I took about ten years ago, and it was all due to a large fish tank my friend had in her living room. I had gone to visit a friend from college who had moved back home to a different state. I spent a week with her and I will never forget what happened in her living room while I was there. She had the power to attract some very big losers into her life who buys groomsmen gift, and when she would wise up and let them go, they were never happy. She had this strange power to draw people to her who would soon be come obsessed. You know how hard it is to get rid of the obsessed right?

She had a very large fish tank in her living room, which was actually a big surprise to me. She never struck me as a fish person or one that buys grooms gifts, but I have to admit it was beautiful and the fish she had were mesmerizing. There was something very relaxing about sitting there and watching the fish swim around this very large fish tank. They seemed so graceful and quite. It was quite refreshing actually.

A few days after I had arrived, a man showed up. Apparently she had dated him a few times before she figured out he was a little nuts. He didn’t want to take no for an answer, and he showed up to plead his case. I was a little scared, but I wasn’t too worried. It was middle of the day and she had very close neighbors. He ended up getting so angry that he put his fist through her large fish tank and also some groomsmen wedding gifts and those poor fish poured out on her living room floor. My friend scrambled to save them as he ran out the door.

In the end, she had to give up her large fish tank and gave her fish to her mom, who also had an aquarium. At that time, the tank had been a gift, and repairing it was out of her budget. She still talks about her large fish tank though, and I know she misses it. Why she never got another is a mystery, but I think perhaps it would remind her of that guy and his evil temper. No one likes to remember their bad choices, so perhaps the fish are better off with some one else anyway.

Looking For A New Pet For Your Fish Tank? Try Hermit Crabs

February 27th, 2009

Hermit Crabs today are getting very popular as pets and if you should ask people with aquariums, they would agree. You see, Hermit Crab pets can be useful when it comes to cleaning the aquarium. Crustaceans are famous and known for their unending crusade against dirt and grime on the ocean floor, right? They’re the one who clean everything to make everything clean. They pick up bacteria, dead cells and everything that is dirty all around them and the eat it. Imagine if you have a fish tank of your own, you don’t have to waste time anymore in investing for some cleaners for your aquarium.

Futhermore, a Hermit Crabs pet can also be very pleasing and entertaining to look at. They walk funny and they can even interact with people. But why are they called hermit crabs? It’s because these very little crustacean will dispose of its ”home” on its back while they get bigger as time passes by and will search for bigger shells, shells that are owned by other animals such as seasnails and mollusks. That’s why they are called “hermit crabs”. Now, all over and across the country (and maybe across the world), many pet fish lovers and sea creature lovers have their own hermit crab or even more.

If you think that hermit crabs can also be your great pets, you don’t need to go anywhere to find some information or knowledge on where to buy them, how to feed them and even find a good Hermit Crab care. All over the World Wide Web, because they are already very in-demand, you can find many different domains that offer good tips and hints on how to care for these teeny weeny pets and where to find them. And if you will learn how to take care of them, they can even outlive your dog or your cat. Normal strong hermit crabs can live for more than 20 years. Isn’t that pretty amazing? And they can really be cute and you have to believe that the longer they are around you, the more they become cute.

Should You Place Goldfish and Koi Together

February 27th, 2009

Normal 0

A very common question for fish pond builders is whether or not it is good to have koi and goldfish together in the same pond.

For those that already added the two types of fishes like koi and goldfish together, you may have some issues developing that are not actually showing up just yet. One of the more common problems that people encounter when adding a new pond to their backyard is the problem of poor planning. Or, perhaps it’s just a matter of not realizing just how complicated building a new pond can be.

At times both your koi and your goldfish will have babies. The problem with this is that the babies are vulnerable to becoming both koi and goldfish food. One possible solution is to make sure there are plenty of places for the tiny fishes to hide from the larger snack loving koi. Sometimes you’ll find that these babies, at least some of them will survive to grow big enough to no longer resemble a snack for your koi or goldfish.

Although koi are a favorite of pond building enthusiasts, goldfish are a wonderful pond pet and can bring a lot of colorful joy as well. Koi can be very pricey compared to goldfish and they can grow quite large as well. Another good point of deciding on goldfish instead of koi is that you will not have to worry about the koi eating the fins or bubble eyes of certain goldfish species.

The simple solution to solving the problem of koi eating your goldfish babies or bothering the large eyed goldfish species is to only have goldfish in your pond. If that solution is just not good enough and you are bound and determined to try having both in the same pond, keep the following ideas in your head. Be prepared to discover that many of your new born goldfish babies become fish food. Avoid placing the types of goldfish in the pond that koi like to nibble on. Namely the big bubble eyed types. And make sure your goldfish are as big as your koi so they do not resemble a yummy koi snack. Or um… you know, the other suggestion of “not” having both koi and goldfish in the same pond.

Many people enjoy having both koi and goldfish together in the same pond. To each his own, so they say. You’ll find more EZ Pond Ideas and tips at our EZ Pond Ideas website.
