Cats & Dogs - Soul Mates?

January 31st, 2010

Soul Mates?

I had heard more than once how Chows are very cat like in their demeanor and attitudes and since I have had 2 of them in my life I can confirm this!  Given this similarity I used to be still unprepared for my current Chow’s love of cats.  My last dog chased cats like every genetically correct pup should do, so I was amazed at my current pup and her feline fascination.

My pal Keisha was solely five months old when she met her first cat.  His name was Pongo and he was conjointly 5 months old.  We were visiting with family in Omaha Nebraska for Christmas and Keisha was firm to form friends with Pongo.
Pongo would don’t have anything to try to to along with her!

They tip toed around each alternative for three days even coming back in the flesh eventually.  Then on Boxing Day we tend to had just finished our lunch of leftovers…you know turkey sandwiches and such, when we heard a crash in the kitchen. Assuming nothing serious we were slow to react.

After we finally moseyed into the kitchen to induce happening the post lunch cleanup they were caught in the act! There they were…Pongo and Keisha face to face eating the turkey that somebody (?!?!?) had pushed off of the counter onto the floor.  They’d a fine feast along and even after their tag team mischief, Pongo was still reluctant to become fast friends although  I suppose he was starting to heat up to the idea, after all Keisha had eaten the turkey and not him!

Unfortunately we had to go away before the link was cemented.  We have a tendency to haven’t seen Pongo since but Keisha responds most enthusiastically to his name still, over 3 years later.

Keisha is sort of four years recent now and since meeting Pongo she has tried to form friends with each cat she meets.  They need all needed absolutely nothing to try and do with her. And then came MOJO.

Mojo is owned by a neighbour and is an outdoor cat.  He totally suits his name and struts through the “hood” as if he owns it and has complete management over all that goes down in it.  He positively has his MOJO goin on!

At 1st Keisha approached him cautiously, and he would bat at her with his paws, but never with claws out.  Slowly but surely they came nearer and nearer to every other.  There was the dancing around every other period that looked very funny as each would take their flip jumping forward then backward not unlike some ritual.  Then came the purring and then the rolling over and belly sniffing.  After that Mojo began to steer around and below Keisha strategically putting his tail in her face.  She managed to maintain her aloof dignity when he will the tail in face thing.  All of this has progressed to Mojo coming back for walks with us, he come to go to and waits at the door for Keisha to come out to play.  Keisha can place her paw on his bum to urge the game of chase going and if Mojo is during the mood he can start the game by running or he will roll onto his back and swat at Keisha with all four paws.  Mojo is the alpha in the relationship no matter his 10 lbs to Keisha’s sixty!

It is the foremost wonderful issue to look at and therefore the neighborhood is mesmerized by these 2 fast friends.

To determine them together one wonders why some cats and dogs get along and others need to destroy each other. Is it perhaps a past life spent together? Early influences like Pongo? Maybe Keisha was a cat in her last life and therefore the affinity for cats and cat like behaviour? Or are they only all very totally different souls with very different personalities and perspectives?  Who knows for positive?  All I recognize is that my heart invariably warms when I see them along and am awed by this wonderful friendship that actually appearance like soul mates in action.

Cats associate the clicker with a good behavior they will use for an extended time. Clicker coaching is associated with classical condition (they associate the sound with food.) and operant conditioning (cat performs movement to receive food).

Why use a clicker and not tell a cat or build a sound to get your cat to do a trick? A clicker contains a sound a cat can hear and associate sensible behavior. With words, our tones in our voice will modification infrequently, which a cat will become confused with the training. With talking for the commands, a cat may mistake the commands. With using a clicker, it is additional of a coaching tool to urge the behavior started with the cat. Clicks, Treat, Click Treat try this for a few times until you see the cat returning for the treat on the click. Next marking the behavior: You will have to point out the cat the hoop. Once the cat touches the hoop, click, treat. Then show the cat to go though the ring once it does click, treat. Continue to try and do this till the cat goes though the ring on its own or your command. Reinforce the behavior Remember to own snacks handy therefore when you are doing see your cat go though the ring a snack is available.

Training a cat with a clicker will be fun for both you and the cat. Taking steps in coaching can be rewarding to you and therefore the cat. Try to not rush a cat in coaching, as they will become confused particularly if they did not get the step before down. The coaching can take time and steps to attain this behavior. Patience, love, and rewards can be the key issue in coaching your cat.

The clicker is a smart exercises tool for a cat. 10 to fifteen minutes every day you ought to get your cat to exercises. For exercising, you’ll be able to have the cat use a hoop, play with a toy, and climb on the scratching post or one thing that focus on the cat getting exercise. Exercises will facilitate the cat to remain healthy and help to stay it out of mischief.

Clickers can come with books to help you train, treats, and a clicker. Clickers come in many different size shapes, and color. You’ll need to analysis the clickers out. Take a look at a pet store, Web sites provide tons of information on coaching and employing a clicker. Try companies that build the clicker by using Web to work out what kind they offer and any extra info that you might would like to urge the method of coaching done. Take a look at articles concerning the clicker. Speak to somebody that has used one. Speak to your area veterinary about training with a Clicker

4 Things to Think About Before Declawing your Cat

January 31st, 2010

Declawing could be a major surgery known as onychectomy, performed beneath anesthesia, that removes the tip of each digit (from the first knuckle out) of the cat’s forepaws. There’s a small chance of death in the surgery, and a declawed cat might have an increased risk of infection and life-long discomfort in its paws. This surgery is not counseled for an adult animal and is considered an act of animal cruelty in some countries (see below).

People generally have cats declawed to forestall them from hunting and from damaging furniture. Rarely, vicious cats are declawed. In the United States, some landlords require that tenants’ cats be declawed.

Veterinarians are generally essential of the procedure and some refuse to perform it as a result of the absence of claws in a cat:

1. Deprives it of its main defense talents, including escaping from predators by climbing trees;
2. Impairs its stretching and exercise habits, leading to muscle atrophy;
3. Compromises its ability to balance on skinny surfaces like railings and fence tops, resulting in injury from falls;
4. Will cause insecurity and a subsequent tendency to bite.

This operation is rare outside of North America. In Finland, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland, declawing is forbidden by the laws against cruelty to animals.[seventeen] In many other European countries, it is forbidden underneath the terms of the European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals, unless “a veterinarian considers [such] non-curative procedures necessary either for veterinary medical reasons or for the good thing about (the) animal”. [18] In Britain, animal shelters realize it tough to put imported cats that are declawed and subsequently most are euthanized.

An alternate to declawing is the application of blunt, vinyl nail caps that are affixed to the claws with nontoxic glue, requiring periodic replacement when the cat sheds its claw sheaths (regarding each four to six weeks). But, the cat will still expertise difficulties because the capped nails aren’t as effective as claws.

Taking Care of Fish and Aquariums

January 30th, 2010

If you own fish and aquariums, you should have already researched to know how to take care of your fish and aquarium. If you have not, then it is important that you research, asked questions, read materials, etc, which will help you provide proper care to your fish and tank.

If you plan to purchase non-marine and marine fish combined, you will need to consider a variety of details. The one thing you want to avoid is inserting aggressive and non-aggressive fish into the same tank. Unless you want to lose money, this is the best recommendation anyone can offer you. Damsels are aggressive fish, which the fish are typically starter fish. Fish owners tend to start with damsels, since the fish are inexpensive and require less maintenance and attention. It is recommended that you only put two of the same or similar fish in a single aquarium.

In addition to fish, you will need to purchase with your aquarium test kits, buffers, filters, gravel, floss, and so on. It is important to keep fish water fresh. If you have, saltwater fish you will need to add salt every two weeks. In addition, you can purchase fish that will adapt well to saltwater, especially if you have primarily saltwater fish in your tank.

How to maintain freshwater fish
Common freshwater fish will adapt to nearly any type of tank. Saltwater fish tend to do well in reef tanks. Since freshwater fish will adapt to a variety of tanks, it is easier to take care of the fish. In fact, freshwater fish is recommended for beginners. In the category of freshwater fish are the tropical fish and the Coldwater fish. To help you get started we can consider aquariums.

Considering aquariums
The first thing you want to consider is the area you will place the aquarium. You want to make sure you have sufficient space at your home to spot the tank. You should never put fish aquariums near open Windows, or windows in general. The sunlight will cause photosynthetic organisms (Algae) to grow quicker. You will need to avoid spotting the tank near heaters, or doorways. It is important that you maintain room temperature when caring for fish. You can purchase dehumidifiers and humidifiers, which can help you, maintain room temperature. In addition, when you purchase your aquarium, make sure that you consider filters, floss, gravel, medicines, food, water, etc. You want to make sure that your plug sockets can handle the level of electricity required of fish aquariums.

How to choose filters?
Filters are categorized as chemical, biological, and mechanical. You can purchase external, internal, and under-gravel filtration systems to support your fish aquarium. If you are just starting out in fish care and aquarium care, avoid the under-gravel filters since it will require excessive maintenance, as well as the filters do not produce quality power. However, you can use under-gravel filters in conjunction with mechanical, biological, or chemical filters. It is recommended to learn the actions performed by each filtering system before joining under-gravel filters with another filtration system.
One of the most popular filters utilized is the internal filters. The internal filters include foam cartridge(s) and a diminutive box. The filters work to draw liquid from grills. The liquids are then filtered by the foam cartridge, which exits through the nozzles found at the top of the filters. Beginners could benefit from using the internal filters, since indicators will alert you when to clean or replace the filters. Valves work to produce oxygen, which adds to the advantages of using internal filters. The internal filters also have filtering pads, which remove chemicals while using polyester and/or carbon pads. The strong synthetic fabrics produce low moisture, which absorbs the chemicals. The filters are hardwearing, which means you will not have to replace the filters as often.

Tropical Freshwater Aquarium Fish Care

January 30th, 2010

How to care for Freshwater Aquarium Fish

Some freshwater fish are easier to keep than other species. Angelfish, Killifish, Clown Loach, Hatchetfish, etc, are few choice fish that you want to consider. However, you will need a bit of experience to handle few of the fish listed. Holacanthus Trimaculatus includes the family to the Trimaculatus group, which includes the Angelfish. These fish have some of the most attractive colors. The tropical fish have dark blue lips, which counterbalance the fish’s golden-yellowish frame. Three-spot Angelfish is a selection of the many Angelfish. The fish come from the West Pacific oceans, as well as the Indian oceans. Three-Spotted Angels have a shape comparable to the butterfly fish. Three-Spotted Angelfish throat has a dark blue as well. The fish vary in color, which you can purchase orange-yellow, gold, etc. Few Angelfish have dark patches around the facial area, which the edges have fill flaps that are covered.

Angelfishes are one of my favorites, since this fish provides an attractive view. The outer edges of the Angelfishes fins are spotted, which sometimes the spots are black. White contrasts the black, which is located at the inner area of the fish. Angelfish grows up to 10 inches in size. In addition, Angelfish tend to feed from plants, larvae, small creatures, etc. Angelfish are recommended to live with their own kin, although the fish are peaceful.

If you are starting out, I will give you a direction to follow in fish care and aquariums. We can start with aquariums.

Aquariums:
Tank Preferred: You want to consider the fish type before considering the preferred tank. It makes no sense to purchase a tank and find out the fish type demand a different style.

Principles of balance: pH is the basic principle of balance, as well as temperature, water condition, etc. In addition to preferred tanks, and principles however you want to consider plant mediums, water, stonework, heaters, filtration, diseases, feed, lighting, fish choice, tank plants: (Floating plants, submerged plants) Furthermore, you will need to consider maintenance, quiddities, and so on. In food supplies, you will have the choice of live food, dried foods, vegetables, and so on.

Fish Group:
The fish groups include the: Polypteridae, Osteoglossidae, Doradidae, Pantodontidae, Notopteridae, Rhamphichthyidae, Mormyridae,Gymnotidae, Umbridae, Cyprinidae, Characidae, Anostomidae, Bagridae, Siluridae, and so on. Prepare to consider more than 20,000 aquarium fish.

Ugly fish:
If you like ugly fish, check out the fascinating Frogfish. Frogfish come from the Antennariuus Group and the family of Anennaridae. Frogfish tend to rest in warm saltwater, or seawater. The frogfish has a territorial behavior pattern, which requires well-matched companionship.

Starters should consider another type of fish, yet the frogfish is ideal for those desiring the ugly and fascinating creatures. Frogfish are kin prefer to live in peaceable environments and in areas where their kind rest. Concluding Frogfish, I want to say that this fish is notorious for hunting, trapping, and feasting on all sized fish, including larger fish.

Continuing, one of the all-time favorite fish is the famous goldfish. The goldfish come from the Carassius Auratus group and is family to the Cyprinidae. Goldfish are little critters and come in or shapes, colors, and size. Goldfish can grow up to 1 inch, or six inches in size. Goldfish are found in most pet shops, and are one of the easier freshwater fish to maintain. Many goldfish are omnivorous, which means the fish will eat about anything you toss their way, such as dried foods, live bait, vegetable materials, and animal materials. Provide these fellers plenty of plants and the goldfish will be your friend for life.

Making Sure Your Pets Stay Off The Furniture

January 30th, 2010

Anyone who has had pets will testify to how hard it is sometimes to ensure they don’t jump all over your furniture. For some reason, pets love to lie on your beds, sit on your couch and even hide in your wardrobes. This wouldn’t be so much of an issue if they just sat that there, but this is rarely the case. Instead they claw at your bedding, chew up your couch and get mud all over your lovely white wardrobes. Don’t keep pulling your hair out though, here are some tips on keeping the pesky pets off.

Training. When all is said and done, investing the time in training your pet correctly will stop it ruining your lovely living room and bedroom-furniture. If you can train your pets early in their life then you stand the best chance, because as the saying goes, ‘you can’t teach and old dog new tricks’. If you can teach them that the furniture is not their plaything, but instead for their owners to use, that is great. But at the very least they should know which places they are not allowed and to listen to your commands to get off anything they shouldn’t be on.

Pet deterrents
. If training your pets was never on the agenda and now they respect you as much as their fleas do, you’ll need to tackle the problem head on. You can buy different types of pet repellent spays and powders that they can’t stand the smell of. They are often citric acid based, which is fine for humans, but pets, with their sensitive noses, don’t like it at all.

Discipline. This ties in with training, but even pets that have had no training at all with still respond to correct discipline. This doesn’t mean that you should hit your pets every time they jump on the chair or bedside cabinets, but instead be consistent with how you react when they do. Make sure you don’t let them get away with lying on the bed one day, only to chastise them the next. Use loud short noises to tell them no, and praise them when they don’t jump up.
