How Can I Stop My Lab From Digging

July 3rd, 2009

Labradors are known to be very friendly dogs that love to be active. Because of this, these dogs have to be given activities to do in order to be happy and well behaved. When a dog doesn’t get the interaction that it needs, it will find a way to entertain itself. Labs often do this by digging. Read on to learn the reason why Labradors dig and how to stop it.

The primary thing to keep in mind is that it is unnatural for a dog not to dig. Digging may be triggered by a number of things. In the wild, a dog will dig a hole to hide its food, escape the weather or just for entertainment. The first step in making sure your dog doesn’t dig up your yard it to determine what the cause for the digging is.

How to Deal With a Digging Lab

If bones or food is being buried, then do not give her the opportunity to bury these by not giving them to your dog at all. Another option is to only give your Lab food or toys inside the house.

Another thing to watch for is if your dog is laying in the hole that it dug. A cool place for your dog in the summer or a warm place in the winter can easily solve some digging problems. A dog house can go a long ways in proving shelter for your Labrador Retriever.

Is your dog digging to get to something on the other side of the fence? If so, you have a larger problem on your hands. Since Labradors are such social dogs they don’t like to be alone. Your dog may be digging because he is lonely.

Here’s a couple of things to try if this is the cause of your labrador digging issue. Start by exercising your dog frequently. Dogs love “play” exercise - go for a run or thow a ball. Leaving plenty of toys out can do wonders if you are going to be away from the house for a while.

If nothing else works, try giving your dog a special place to dig. Give her a special treat then they dig in their special area. As a last resort, bury chicken wire where your Lab likes to dig. The chicken wire is uncomfortable on his paws and should stop the digging.

Overall, not giving your dog free range while you are away is the best option. Try sectioning off a part of the yard to keep her in when you are out. This will confine any yard damage to one area

Digging by your Labrador Retriever can be stopped. It is simply a matter of determining the cause of the problem and fixing it. It doesn’t help to yell at your dog for digging. This just confuses her and makes matters worse. Finding a diversion for your dog’s energy is a much better option. Give your Labrador Retriever lots of attention, interaction and exercise and you’ll find that you have much fewer problems. The secret to any dog training is lots of love and positive reinforcement.
