Is your dog feeling bored, anxious or lonely?

The most common cause of unwanted barking is a dog who feel lonely or anxious. Does your dog spend the major part of every day alone? Your dog will need plenty (1-1.5 hours), of exercise to compensate for that. A walk before or after work is highly recommended. Look around for a hired dog walker, if this is too difficult. Your dog will appreciate this attention. Try leaving your dog with toys when you are away. Dogs love balls and perhaps you could even leave your dog a bone to chew on. Try rotating toys and your dog will think it has a new toy each time.

A common cause of barking is a dog who spends too much time alone. Dogs need lots of interaction, attention and communication as is the nature of a social animal. Spend a lot of time with your dog playing and showing it affection. Dogs thrive on this. Find activities that include your dog, when at home. Happiness is the sign of a loved dog. A dog that has its other needs met is also less likely to manifest other inappropriate behaviors and you won’t need to Stop Your Dog Chewing.

Is your dog letting you know it wants to play?

If your dog is barking so that you will play with it, do not give in to this demand. Reinforcing a bad habit will be the result, if you do. A relationship built on mutual respect does not tolerate this sort of harassment. Ignore this type of behavior if you want your dog to stop demanding your attention in this way. Moving away and turning your back towards your dog is a way to demonstrate this effectively. This is likely to confuse your dog to start with. Since the barking behavior has worked in the past your dog may thinking that if it barks for just a little longer you will give in. Don’t Succumb! Be firm. Almost certainly the barking will get worse before it gets better. When your dog has realized the barking isn’t working remember to praise it. Positive reinforcement is the key and your dog wants to please you. Re learning this barking behaviour will only take a short time, if you are consistent.

Effective dog training requires consistency. All pack animals of which dogs are one, need to know who is in charge. Your leadership is necessary for your dog to respect you and become well adjusted, well behaved and happy. A dog does not necessarily have to be quiet to be well behaved. If your directions are clear your dog will learn when it is and is not appropriate to bark.
