Summer Grooming Tips for your Dog

June 29th, 2009

During the warm summer months  it is especially important to keep your pets groomed.

Grooming will contribute to their general health and happiness. As the temperature rises consistent  grooming will keep the following health problems under control,  parasites, fleas, ticks and

mosquitoes which can become a major health concern during the warm months if not properly attended to. Aside from them causing skin irritations, these parasites can also cause disease. Ticks can cause anemia and certain ticks carry Lymes Disease.

Most dog breeds are less heat-tolerant than humans. We sweat, but they don’t have a lot of sweat glands and must pant to lower their body temperature—not nature’s most efficient cooling mechanism. Dogs with heavy double coats or short, flat faces suffer even more when the temperature rises. If your dog’s breed hearkens from a cold climate (Samoyeds, Siberian Huskies, or St. Bernards for example), or has a short nose (such as Bulldogs, Pugs, or Pekingese do), take particular care not to let your dog overheat. Yet, any dog can suffer the effects of heat, sun, and humidity, and any dog can benefit from good quality grooming to stay healthy, comfortable, and yes, good-looking, all summer long.

Shaving the coat … may seem like a solution but is not a good idea. Your dog’s coat is insulation that protects him from both the heat and the cold.  His coat insulates him from the heat, UV rays  and insects. Shaving the coat also exposes a dog’s skin to sunburn! for haircuts that are short … a good rule of thumb is to use clippers with a snap on comb attachment. Cutting just the top coat and not the undercoat leaves nature’s protection against sun and heat and delivers manageable style.

Grooming at home should also includes baths, dogs thoroughly love  baths from the hose in the summer!  One of the best, shampoos to use because it is so gentle, is no more tears baby shampoo, that way if the shampoo rolls down into their eyes, it will not sting or burn their little eyes.It is very important to always make sure you rinse your dog well!

Summer time is fun and exciting for our pets. The heat can also mean discomfort for our companions. They need our aid in protecting them from conditions such as overheating, dehydration, and sunburn.
